On October 31st 1938 at 8PM people across the nation listened to their radios to hear a version of H.G. Wells' War Of The Worlds. This was read by Orson Wells and part of the Mercury On The Air Theater broadcast by CBS. This particular evening it was performed and portrayed as a news breaking interruption from the regular schedule. Martians were invading Earth and decided to land in a small N.J. town near Princeton called Grover's Mill. This was chosen simply by random on a map. As residents and the nation were glued to their radios it caused wide spread fear and panic as they believed this mock invasion was actually taking place. It was not until later in the broadcast that it was announced that it was a radio performance and a customized version of H.G. Wells' War Of The Worlds.
Grover's Mill has changed since those days but it will go down in history as the location of the fictitious and deadly invasion! Imagine... Martians landing in Grover's Mill... how silly!
